Biotechnological advances for improving natural pigment production: a state-of-the-art review

Abstract In current years, natural pigments are facing a fast-growing global market due to the increase of people’s awareness health and discovery novel pharmacological effects various pigments, e.g., carotenoids, flavonoids, curcuminoids. However, traditional production approaches source-dependent generally subject low contents target pigment compounds. order scale-up industrial production, many efforts have been devoted increasing from producers, via development both in vitro plant cell/tissue culture systems, as well optimization microbial cultivation approaches. Moreover, synthetic biology has opened door for heterologous biosynthesis design re-construction biological modules systems bio-platforms. this review, innovative methods strategies engineering native producers comprehensively summarized.
